Art with Mrs Sweet
In the Kimberley region rock art was made by First Nations People. Many different groups created many different styles of rock art.
Some of the art has been dated to be over 40 000 years old. Some art is still being refreshed, and new art is being created. There are thousands of rock art sites. Kimberley rock art is mostly painted with different kinds of ochre that bond incredibly well with the sandstone. The art was usually painted in rock shelters where people lived and conducted ceremonies.
The students across the campus viewed Kimberley Rock Art and how the ochre paint was made. Using oil pastels or wax crayons in the colours of ochre, they drew an animal. Each year level drew a different animal. Texture was added to create the effect of rock. The paper was then crumpled up and after carefully flattening it out dye was added. The year six students pasted the work onto black card. It is bulging off the card to look like a rock wall.
