Year Three National Simultaneous Storytime

On Wednesday 19th May, the Year Three classes took part in National Simultaneous Storytime. This event happens annually and each year a picture book written and illustrated by an Australian author and illustrator, is read simultaneously in libraries, schools and many other places around the country. The book chosen for this year was ‘Give Me Some Space’, written and illustrated by Phillip Bunting, and read by astrophysicist, Dr Shannon Walker, from the International Space Station!  All the Year Three students gathered to watch the story being read and afterwards had a group discussion about the book.

After the book reading, the students took part in making their own ice-cream, as every astronaut still loves to eat ice-cream, even in Space!!  This tied in well with the Chemical Science unit they are doing in the classroom and Science lab.  The activity was a great way to get our budding scientists involved in learning first-hand how materials, such as salt, can change the properties of a liquid and lower the freezing and melting points of a material. Students were able to choose if they wanted to make vanilla, chocolate or peppermint ice-cream. All ingredients were put into a zip-lock bag, followed by another bag with ice and salt and then finally, students shook the bag until the liquid turned to ice-cream. Most students enjoyed the delicious treat that followed, however some were left with rather salty ice-cream. In the end, much fun was enjoyed by all.
