Sustainability Corner
I have taken on the fulltime position of Science and Sustainability specialist for 2021 for Joondalup Education Support Centre and continue my journey as Joondalup Schools Sustainability Coordinator. This has enabled me to implement a school wide campus focus on sustainable practices and teaching. Many classes have volunteered to be responsible for areas such as paper collection, worm farming, composting, up keeping the Grow Free Cart, vegetable garden and vertical garden.
Our 2 bin system is in full swing with students being taught what goes into each bin.
The campus participated in School Cleanup Day in February and we are pleased to say we collected 17 less bags of rubbish than last year. Remember we are all responsible for keeping our school looking fabulous.

After School Garden Club
Our small but dedicated group of students, parents and staff come together every Monday afternoon from 3.15 to 4pm to look after the garden. We have prepared and planted the beds so next term we should be able to start harvesting. This week we had a planting celebration party which was enjoyed by all. Please see the Garden Club part of the Newsletter to download a form.
Big news is coming regarding our Recycling programs, so stay tuned!
Please continue to bring in:
- Batteries
- Coffee pods (make sure they are DRY and EMPTY). You can bag the grounds up and send to school as well.
- Ring pulls from cans of drink
- Plastic lids from bottles (wash and remove inner seal)
- Containers for change bottles/cans (clean and LIDS removed). Place in the BIG blue recycling skip near the admin area
We have continued partnerships with WasteWise, WaterWise, SunSmart, Clean Up Australia, Bunnings Joondalup, Woolworths, The Worm Shed, Tucker Bush and Sustainable Schools WA amongst a few.
Happy gardening and sustainable thinking,
Sandra Bennett – Science/Sustainability Teacher (JESC). Sustainability Coordinator (Joondalup Schools)
