Music News with Miss O'Connor
Welcome back to another exciting term. We have had an interesting but exciting start in the Music room!
Lower Primary
The Pre-primary and Year 1 students have been studying the musical element of tempo. They recently explored fast tempo through Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s orchestral piece Flight of the Bumblebee. The music paints a picture of a bumblebee buzzing chaotically about! The students had the chance to fly about the music room being bumblebees! This piece was composed in 1899-1900 but is still used frequently in popular culture. Fun fact: this piece featured in the 1993 animated series Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog as part of the show's opening theme.
The Year 2 and 3 students have been exploring the instruments of the orchestra. The instruments of the orchestra are divided into sections- the strings, woodwind, brass and percussion. The students have covered the string and percussion families so far. They have enjoyed playing on the various pitched and non-pitched percussion instruments in the music room. Did you know that the orchestra can have 100 or more musicians playing at one time?
The Year 4, 5 and 6 students have embraced the sunshine and worked outside the music room. They have studied the elements of tempo and dynamics, listening to environmental sounds as they explore how these elements can be heard in every day sounds. They have listened to Edvard Griegs In the Hall of the Mountain King and discussed how these elements of music have been used as a tool to create the music. Before they listened, the students read a story about Peer, a mischievous boy from Norway, who ventured off into the forest one day and came across a castle. Feeling adventurous, Peer snuck into the castle and began creeping around. Little did he know that the castle belonged to the Mountain King and he was trespassing- he was an uninvited guest! Peer got himself into a bit of trouble when he bumped into the Mountain King and had to run away or suffer the wrath of the Mountain King! We discussed how the music used these elements to tell the story of Peer and the Mountain King.
Wednesdays in the Art room with the Pre-primary and Year 1 students has been so much fun. We have continued to explore the elements of line and the primary colours with the creation of our Monsters! We have begun exploring the element of texture and how different surfaces can contribute and shape our art work!
